From a quick check I would estimate your path to Stefan is about 50% sea whereas from here about 14%. The difference in day/night s/n at this QTH must be at least 40 dB (according to OP).

 

Looking at the SL grab today (settings: 42 mHz noise bw), there have been faint traces of Stefan?s signal throughout the day ? no decodes so far this evening at 17:20 UTC. No other signal traces seen between 478.6 ? 478.8 kHz during the day.

 

It will be interesting to compare when I get a ?proper? resonated antenna in the air rather than the 1m untuned loop.

I could hear DK7FC this morning around 0900 strong enough for a CW QSO. I made no attempt to decode, just had a listen to the signal then had to go out
