I have just come back from a trip to DL land, and  am horrified to discover they spell metres the Yanke way (and they drive on the same wrong side of the road :-)

All the athletics events articles use 'metres' as they were started by
UK authors and it seems to have stuck, see
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/60_metres. There was a conflict when we
started the 60 meter one that it clashed so was changed to 'meters'...
