Rik,

Strictly speaking, these three countries are not part of the United Kingdom. I am not sure of the constitutional position of the Isle Of Man (GD) except I believe its Parliament (Tynwald) is older than the one at Westminster.

The Channel Islands (GU and GJ) have never been part of the UK.  They were on the winning side with William of Normandy in 1066 and I understand that their allegiance is to the British monarch _ as successor to the Dukes of Normandy_. The UK government handles defence and external affairs for them, but they are not part of the EU and they do not have Value-Added Tax.

Legislation passed by the UK Parliament is, where appropriate, submitted to the States of Jersey and the States of Guernsey (the islands' parliaments) for consideration.

Note also that Sark does have its own parliament (Chief Pleas) but is still part of the Bailiwick of Guernsey, as is Alderney.
