I also own a W/G Selective Level Meter, it's the SPM-33 and it also
produces a (false) signal at exactly 2000Hz. Seems to a specific problem
of W/G equipment.

Gerhard,

The 2000 Hz I was referring to is the center frequency beat note produced by an on frequency signal. I find it a bit hard to copy CW at that frequency. Actually 1000 Hz is my preferred tone. I suspect that comes with my past telcom days of aligning analog channels with 1000 Hz :)

But I know the 2000 Hz note you speak of from the WG SLMs. I do not have that problem with my antennas due to fairly high signal input levels. When connected to a small antenna the internal on frequency signal will show up. Normally I just offset the dial to move the desired signal note off of 2000 Hz. If your SPM-33 is like the 16 or 19 it has a tracking generator output from a connector in the rear. I have the WG AR-160 level generator which uses the output to give a selectable level up to +12.99 dbm. I found that when the tracking output of the SLM is terminated instead of connected to the level generator or just left open the internal signal is just barely detectable if there at all. If your 33 has this tracking option connector try terminating it if you haven't already done so.

73,
Dex
