Very good indeed Mel: we know you are a very experienced and keen CW man with an excellent station.

An advantage of WSPR is that the transmissions can be monitored for hours and S/N reports recorded on the internet database. Already the usefulness of this is clear to me. For example, F5WK has just reported me at 27dB below Andy. I am a further 100kms away. From this, and other comparisions, I can get quite a good idea of my ERP relative to "the big boys".

I can copy Russian stns during daytime as far away as UA9 at times on 160 m which is similar to 600m also the MOSCOW stations can copy me on 600m during late afternoon day light on CW. Nothing new about these conditions. This is old hat to experenced MF operators.
I have also been copied on 137 khz during daylight hours in the USA ie early evening. using  CW.

Over the past days I monitored the G4JNT WSPR beacon 24/24.
During daytime I have a weak but consistent copy of Andy's signal,
average -24dB with ups and down of some dB.
During nighttime the signal is -10dB on average, with the usual deep
QSB (peaking -1dB, dips down to -20dB).
But the most interesting observation is that in the afternoon the
first peaks (from -24dB up to -8dB) occur as early as 15:45 UTC.
This is almost 1 hour before sunset (16:37 UTC) and almost 1.5 hours
before the D-layer (at mid point) goes into darkness.
