Hi Mal, LF,

FB your comments regarding the FT-847 etc, I noticed from previous mails that you use a UC/1, I hear they are very good.

Regarding aerials, I understand that there is no substitute for full size resonant hardware but due to my small garden I have to make the best of the space & keep on the right side of XYL & neighbours. So the vertical for Tx/Rx on 136 & 500 KHz tuned at the base & the mini-whip for all other VLF to MF Rx options.

Also being in the middle of a dense housing estate the noise level does rise & fall sometimes to dramatically high levels & then to dramatically quiet levels but generally mid-way. Of course at the moment there is lots of noise generation with the large amount of Xmas lighting displays including my own !!

May I take this opportunity to wish you & all who contribute & read the LF mail

A VERY HAPPY CHRISTMAS

All My Best Wishes

73

Gary.
The FT 847 is good on 500 khz with a good antenna. I have one here but the
Datong UC/1 upconverter IF 144 and 28 mhz fed into the ICOM 746 is better.
Those using the mini whip are doing well but it is no substitute for a real
antenna like a 1/4 wave or large loop if you have the space and a quiet
environment.

Hi John, Jay, LF,

Better results this morning, several hits for Jay (WE2XGR/2) & one only
for
John (WE2XGR/3), see attachment showing the 2 data lines.

I used two set ups with 2 instances of WSJT running with the following,
quite surprised at the results :-

1 - Yaesu FT-847 with PA0RDT mini-whip at 9 metres high.
2 - JRC NRD-345 with 500 KHz top load vertical at 12 metres high.

Results = number 1 set up won hands down as shown above & no hits with
number 2 setup.
