Could you have a faulty device?
I have a mini-whip made by the man himself and it performs very well

Everything is exactly as Roelof published the specs and dimensions... I
hear WWVB and Dixon, BUT it is nowhere near the levels I get on any other
antenna for this region of the band. Lots of intermod and generally poor
results all around on LF.
