Amateur rules, Part 12, late 1950s:
Alaska, the states on the Gulf of Mexico, and the Caribbean had no privileges;
1975-2000: Hawaii and the western states (500w day, 200w night), except less in Washington (200w day, 50w night).
1800-1825 Great Lakes and northeastern states (500w day, 200w night), less in the Mid-Atlantic states and west to Kansas and Oklahoma (200w day, 50w night).
In New York, the out-of-phase signals sounded to me like a buzzsaw, but a rather melodic one (?), that periodically swept swiftly upwards to a peak then swiftly back down.
