Gary,

There is an excellent treatment of verticals and ground systems on L.B. Cebik's (W4RNL) web page at:
http://www.cebik.com/gp/gp.html
and more good general information at the main site:
http://www.cebik.com

(B.T.W.) Cebik demonstrates on his web page that term "counterpoise" is meaningless when refering to antennas.

I believe that you will find the best solution is resonant radials. Ground stakes are more helpful for static/lightning protection.

Hi all,

I have just obtained a Sandpiper V9 multi-band vertical (160m -10m), can any
of you with experience of this type of antenna offer me an answer?

Should I use :-

1 - Resonant length counterpoises
2 - Random length counterpoises
3 - Ground spike/rod
4 - Both counterpoises & earth rod?

The manufacturer says mount 18 inches above ground & connect bracket to
earth spike. I can't mount it like this due to the layout of my small
garden, the ideal place to mount it is on a short mast at the rear of my
garage at about 8 to 10 feet above ground at that point but the ground
slopes up nearby to make the bse of the antenna about 4 feet above the top
of the slope. items in the way are a small greenhouse, the garage, pergola,
garden fence & the slope of course.

For brief details of antenna see - http://www.sandpiperaerials.co.uk/
