Dear LF Group,
Worked G3LDO on 73kHz this morning, but only had time for a few CQs before
re-wiring the station to try and work SA6Q on 137.7k after the SAQ
broadcasts. The latter copied well here, RST599 as usual on an assortment
of antennas and receivers, although I also noticed the keying problem - in
some cases, dashes were missed at the start of a character, turning "S"
into "I", "V" into "U" etc. They also seemed to spend some time tweaking
the frequency before and after the transmissions. The final broadcast
seemed to be slightly better. I had the electro-mechanical RX going again -
the absence of GBR makes the tuning less critical, since it is no longer
necessary to zero-beat the 16kHz signal. I didn't have much luck with SA6Q;
I saw some manual CW being sent on 137.7kHz, but it was below audible
level. On 14.035MHz they were quite strong, but seemed to be having trouble
copying the stations calling them, and shut down before the scheduled time.
I will shortly head off home and change things back to 73kHz again, and see
what is happening. If nothing much is going on, I will try for some
cross-band QRSS contacts transmitting between 71.8 and 71.9kHz (There are
several weak carriers around 72.0k at my QTH), receiving around 137.7kHz. I
should be QRV by about 1630utc. I will also be QRV again tomorrow morning
from about 0700utc for a few hours - Ian, if that is OK, I will look for
you between 71.8 and 71.9 then. If the noise level is reasonably low, I
might try for some cross-band CW or QRSS contacts, if anyone is interested.
Cheers, Jim Moritz
