In the early 1970s I was conducting research into telecommunications switching
by optical means. At one stage, it looked as if I needed an acousto-optic cell
using a particular concentration of ethyl alcohol.
I asked my supervisor for permission to obtain a sample of each beverage
stocked by the University bar to try in the cell. He asked our sponsor, who
said that they had no objection in principle but they would not be able to
recover the alcohol tax from the authorities.
Instead I was allowed to order a solid-state cell based on (I think) potassium
niobate at a cost of over GBP1000.
