Real RS232 are +Ve when asserted, -Ve when off.   That is what it was designed for.

If a TTL level converter were used, inversion would be necessary.  Of course, with an optical input SSR, you'd do that just by connecting the input the other way round. 
Opto-isolators make things so simple
