Well, my new tests this evening are hardly likely to shatter long-held scientific theories, however to me they are "interesting".

Comparing the reports given to G8HUH and LA8AV over the last few weeks suggests little real improvement. From this I conclude:

The mains earth is actually quite effective. Radials didn't seem to improve my results much, if at all.
I need to get a better antenna in the air. My "compromise" antenna is really a compromise - OK to play with, but little different from my earth-electrode "antenna". If I want to take the band seriously I need a serious antenna. Sadly, I am wobbly on ladders these days!
Useful results can be obtained on 630m WSPR with a VERY basic set-up.

Thanks for the reports so far. Keep them coming as this is far from a good scientific test.
