Using the message "NM" (as shown by Stefan) to undo the phase modulation on the received signal, I got a peak with amplitude corresponding to Eb/N0 = -1.3 dB. Looks like we were pretty close, only about a dB short of success. For me, it would be interesting to retry another short message (2 char) tomorrow morning.

Thanks Uwe for the repeated transmission, and congratulations to you and Stefan for the successful decode!

Unfortunately no joy here yet: The decoder decided for "N=" at 0.3 dB Eb/N0, which does not seem to be correct. So despite low QRN there's still not quite enough SNR here.

All the best,
Markus (DF6NM)

Hello Uwe,

Thanks for the VLF transmission and the fun.

The decoder quickly released a decode at a constant phase (4x 180)! I would guess this is a true decode. The message makes sense :-)
I repeated the procedure with 15 deg steps to get a more precise information about the phase variation over our path.

If you are still in JO43SV, then we are in 502 km distance.

It looks like transmitting in the morning hours is a good decision. Also the 4 hours is a good choice. Maybe we can also try 3 characters in 30s symbols?

Or is there someone else out there who want to try but didn't announce it yet?

73, Stefan

PS: I hope it is OK to show the message of the decode. I think that a screenshot is more interesting for those who didn't try yet and still think about it :-)
