Opposed to the earlier 8K19A experiments, carrier phase estimation by averaging squared amplitudes (~ Costas loop) seems to work better with the shorter 1/4 code (i.e. less incoherent averaging) and the long message (more symbols to average). All successful decodes appeared early with either 0° or 180° flat phase, and there was always a clearly visible pattern in the symbol phase dots and a useful peak in the spectrum of squares.
