I heard my first 136Khz station today, a German CW beacon. I had
thought of getting on LF, and the new MF allocation when it comes,
but if most of the activity is now on data/QRSS etc then perhaps not.

First, congrats to your first LF CW reception.
There's not much going on and i can't call CQ all the time. So i have to
decide to run a beacon or let the PA get dusty. You and many others
heared that beacon today, so it was no waste of energy at all, isn't it? :-)
It's up to the active stations to make and keep the band alive. Become
one of them and never become tired to stay active. If YOU are active,
them others have a reason to become active too/again. Learn to ignore
the pessimistic and demotivating shouts of some poor men. Concentrate on
the fascination to radiate a signal from a piece of wire on a wavelength
of 2200m and how it propagates.
