Hi Stefan, there has been some geomagnetic activity that might account for
the poor conditions you saw. Yes poor propagation also affects the noise
level at this time of year because a lot of the noise is lighning induced
and may travel a long distance. Even noise from distances beyond 1000km
could be affected. As Markus suggested there has been a fairly long lastig
proton event which began on the 7th. There are known to cause Polar Cap
Absorption and the hot electrons may well have diffused to lower latitudes
before decaying. There was also some further minor storm level geomagnetic
activity on the 8th though the Dst index which I use as a guide to
night-time absorption did not drop substantially.

Thanks for the comments I would not have spotted the "quieter" conditions.
