That's by far the best DX I've had using just the end fed 40m aerial.

Unfortunately the wind did not die down all day so balloon launching was impossible.
Tomorrow doesn't look as if it will be any better.

I have plans to transmit VLF most weekends and so will keep trying and improving the system.

Hi Chris - here is a shot of your 8976.66 signal this afternoon up here in Toseland IO92vf. The S/N looks to be about 6-7dB. At 19.4km this is not quite far field radiation but certainly outside the reactive near field of your 40m end fed. I'm using a 1m whip about 3m high with a BF862 preamp to Stefan's DK7FC design. FFT bin size was 1.9mHz.

An open space or field would be more suitable, its difficult to get a balloon absolutely vertical even under calm conditionx.

thermal dynamics, up drafts etc.

The OE5ODL balloon was varying from near vertical to horizontal when I copied him a few days ago on 9 Khz

snagged a nearby tree.

I'll try again later if the wind drops.

I shall send a continuous carrier as and when conditions permit.

 

My newly built VLF TX is working well and can deliver about 150 watts of RF.

On this occasion I shall be using the original (fairly lossy) loading coil but am presently making a more efficient one.
