Hello Chris,

They sell a balloon / kite combination.

You're right Mal,

Space is extremely restricted here and I'm almost surrounded by trees and buildings.
There's a playing field at the rear which if the wind was S- SW would be ok for a kite.
I may try that soon.

It's raining now but will keep an eye open for any opportunity to transmit using the balloons.

I'm TX ing now on the 40m end fed inverted 'L' aerial but only immediate locals will receive me
I suspect.

Chris
An open space or field would be more suitable, its difficult to get a balloon absolutely vertical even under calm conditionx.
thermal dynamics, up drafts etc.
The OE5ODL balloon was varying from near vertical to horizontal when I copied him a few days ago on 9 Khz

LF

The wind is too strong to launch the balloons anywhere near to vertically and the first attempt
snagged a nearby tree.

I'll try again later if the wind drops.

I think I'll take up stamp collecting as a hobby instead !

LF,

I hope to be transmitting soon, at least by 10.00 Z

Conditions are not ideal with light drizzle and freshening breeze but we'll give it a shot.

The measured QRG is

8.976 642 kHz

Thanks for all efforts to find the signal.

Chris,

My system is on now (from 0900) and screenshots are being uploaded to https://dl.dropbox.com/u/15047843/xbm_grab.jpg.

LF,

I have had permission to transmit on VLF this coming weekend: 12th and 13th February.
Weather permitting I shall try again with my balloon-launched aerial, hopefully about 50m vertical.

The frequency will be

8.976 66 kHz  (i.e. 10.000 MHz / 1114) and is derived from an oven controlled xtal oscillator.
Hopefully the frequency will be more stable than last time.
If this frequency proves unsuitable I can transmit on 10.000 MHZ / 1112 . .10.000 MHz / 1116  etc.

I shall send a continuous carrier as and when conditions permit.

My newly built VLF TX is working well and can deliver about 150 watts of RF.
On this occasion I shall be using the original (fairly lossy) loading coil but am presently making a more efficient one.

All reports will be most welcome.
