Actually, I think they invented it for good economic reasons. I think it's got 
to the point where it's cheaper to have two power wires plus two signal wires 
going from the dashboard to the back of the car, rather than the traditional 
wiring loom for tail lights, brake lights, indicators, and maybe rear screen 
heater, wiper and washer. I would guess the door sensors (a) turn on the 
interior light and (b) maybe sound some warning if you drive off with the door 
ajar.
