You are right about the transformer thing and the calculation being incorrect, however, you will be pleased to know this has been put right in the second edition.
I totally agree, these books are an excellent starting point.

As an owner of the 1st edition of LF Today may I thank you for this most helpful little book; there has been much in it that I've enjoyed and used as sources of information. I do hope a new version is produced in due course.

Maybe the next edition will include something about WSPR and how effective results may be achieved, on 500kHz at least, with a totally simple station set-up like my own running just microwatts ERP.

The only error/confusion I spotted is on p81 (of the 1st edition) when it talks about current transformers. There is something screwy here when working out the current in the secondary.
