One has to be careful about wideband signals, for
instance AM on MF can suffer from Selective fading, various components across
the several khz of bandwidth carrying the modulation can fade causing
distortion, which most will have observed.
Some spread spectrum systems(there are a
few varities) try to overcome this selective fading but in essence it
relies on one specific frequency being received out of the multitude,
so really its back to a narrow signal making it.
I have tried to keep it simple, in reality it is
more involved.
