i think Chris ,
G4AYT , was considering an amateur beacon ( i.e
with ERP power reaching 1 W ) instead of a commercial station (
take DCF39 at 138.83 kHz as an example) producing , say, 60000
Watts of erp pwr. you put a "5 cm" piece of wire into
antenna socket of ur rcvr and you can hear it. it is a little more
challenging experience to hear a station with power limits
accesible also to your tx equipment not to mention the
sensitivity test of your receiving gear anyway, 1 W versus 60000
Watts makes a subtle difference...
