During the 1950 period and beyond the 807 tube was
the norm for wideband/distribution amplifiers used on receiving stations. The
6V6, 6L6 and 807 were also used in a variety of other ancillary equipment. This
was overkill in most cases but I suppose these tubes were plentiful and cheap at
the time. The equipment was desgined and built around these tubes. One other
tube popular at the time was the 813 for transmitters like the RCA ET4336 TX but
to mention one.
The advantage of this trend was that tubes were
interchangeable between equipment units.
There were also 12 v versions of the above tubes,
again popular in mobile and aeronautical equipment like the Collins and Bendex
transmitters.
