There certainly would seem to be something wrong in the receive set up if
you cannot hear (or see) Loran. Certainly Steve GW4ALG in Chepstow receives
it 'well' (ie strong enough to be a nuisance) and I would have thought with
a significant sea path between you and Lessay it would probably be stronger
than it is here. Here in Bracknell Loran is always present, but at a too
low level to cause real problems - it does vary a lot from day to day but
its chatter is clearly audible on the receiver. Steve has commented that
Loran has been weaker with him recently, and it is probably so here as well,
but is clearly audible on my loop. Vertical antennas seem to pick it up
stronger than loops.
As for 'seeing' Loran on Argo (and I confess to have been playing with that)
there is no doubt at all, you can't miss it (provided you have the
sensitivity etc correct so you can see the background noise). The only use
of Loran on Argo in my case is as a reference to calibrate the drift of my
FT101ZD vfo - back to more traditional modes me thinks...
Either as suggested you have a high local noise level (and untuned long
wires are NOT the best for lf) or you have lack of receive sensitivity
(possibly crossmod, but you do have front end selectivity don't you). You
should be able to hear at least some of the continentals, some of them are
quite strong!
