Hi all I think Mal is right that the AR88D is not a diversity receiver, BUT
I recollect a rack of three which I think had been modified for diversity
use. The local oscillators in 2 were disconnected and all three were driven
from the LO of the middle chassis in the rack. I believe there was some
attachment to the AGC to select the audio, but not sure about that. I can't
recollect where I heard about it but it was probably out of Burtonwood USAF
Base near Liverpool, in the late 50s. There were all sorts of weirdies
around like sets rewired with PVC covered wire!! I gather these were sets
used as training exercises for radio technicians (SO BEWARE!) Even in the
late 50s there were piles of crates of these beasts new and unopened in the
stores, so I guess they were available to be used for all sorts of
'hairbrained schemes'. I did hear that the 1940s 'price' of the set was
about £1000 which should make it quite an expensive rx, even when compared
with Racals, HF2050s and WJ kit! Whoops I'm starting to drool!
Cheers de Alan G3NYK
