"Early tests proved that signals sent from the transmitter to a receiver placed 100 feet away produced VLF radiation up to 300 times more efficiently than other antennas with similar designs."
100 feet (30 meter) is near field for  VLF (1/1000 lambda at 10kHz).

The claims done in the article might not be relevant to the far field.

So I wouldn't recommend to take done your 136kHz / 472kHz wire antenna's yet ;-)
