Hello Rik,
I knew someone who had one of the amazing Icom 781's and although he
no longer has it believes this wide band mod may allow TX down there.
As it is apparently just cutting a leg on a through hole resistor it
should be simple to try it and see:
Icom IC-781 (IC 781 IC781) General coverage transmit mod
Unplug power and remove the antenna connection.
Place rig upright, facing you, as in normal operation. Remove the top
cover of the rig.
Logic "B" unit is on top, left side as you face the rig; easily
located by the CPU chip and memory battery.
Locate R80, just to the right of the shiny middle PC board mounting
screw on logic B unit. Cut the resistor. CPU reset should not be
necessary.
Replace top cover and enjoy 60 meters, MARS and CAP frequencies
(please have the proper licenses to transmit there). NOTE: Auto tuner
operation is not guaranteed, especially on the 4 Mhz MARS frequencies.
