From p18 of the T&R Bulletin for December 1926, in an article by 6MU (aka G6MU or GI6MU or GX6MU*) about his round trip from Belfast to Montreal and back:

Note that country codes ("intermediates") seem to have been used for international working before prefixes were in use. 6MU would have called US station 1AW as follows: "1AW UG 6MU" rather than "W1AW DE GI6MU".
