Hi Richard and Ha-Jo

First off I am not receiving my own mails to the RSGB Blacksheep reflector? So
it was a surprise to see your interesting replies
.
Well Ha-Jo to have such a unique and interesting design rejected says something
about the GQRP. However in their defence my first off air copy of SAQ was using
a design out of Sprat magazine. It was a single transistor self oscillating
mixer using a 3mHz xtal and an unturned antenna input. The output IF was into
my TS690s TRX at about 3.0172mHz. I still have that unit.

The SAQ transmission for me operates on so many different levels. It is link to
the origins of radio science. It demonstrates that there is no boundary between
the technologies, it’s all physics. The machine itself is a grand demonstration
of magnetic reluctance in operation. Not a valve/tube or transistor in sight
but producing a pure CW single frequency tone, unlike spark.

I have noticed the DL interest in reporting SAQ for some time and have never
understood why it is not so popular in G land. It can be heard using a PC with
soundcard so it’s not as though there are any serious technical hurdles to
jump. Maybe the RSGB need to make an effort to publicise the transmissions to
boost listener numbers in the UK.

I am as much to blame since I have not reported for some also.

 Hans, it
would  be great if you could publish details of your
receive and antenna on the web, or put a short film on you
 tube of your 17khz loop

 Dear
 Pete,

I guess I am the culprit why so many Germans are able to
receive SAQ (the maximum number of SAQ receptions in Germany
had even been 186 a few years ago):

I have started to receive SAQ in 1997, being a retired OM
living in a small village in eastern Bavaria.

At first I have built a converter for SAQ to receive its
frequency in a radio amateur band. But then a neighbor two
houses away has installed a photovoltaic system on its
house, and the operation of this system increased the qrm
level so much that I could not receive SAQ any longer under
 these conditions.

Then I had the idea to build a portable receiver especially
for SAQ, powered by a 9 V battery and a maximum current of
25 mA, depending on the audio power needed for the
headphones. I even found out that I just had to divide the
frequency of the well known clock crystal 32768 Hz by two to
get a tone frequency of 816 Hz for the reception of SAQ.
This receiver has been published in the german radio amateur
perodical CQ DL May 2013. Six months later the number of
german radio amateurs sending repots to SAQ has increased
considerably. Still being a german member of the british
G-QRP-Club I have also written an English version of this
SAQ receiver, but it had been rejected because of "not
being QRP". Just this year, on 13. April 2016, I have
sent another English text about this receiver by email to
Radcom. But until now I have not received any answer so far
if Radcom would accept this text or not.

MY SAQ receiver is based on the fact that outside of
residential areas the QRM in the VLF range is rather low.
The antenna used is a tuned loop for 17.2 kHz. The loop is
also able to separate vertically polarised  radio waves
from horizontal polarized waves. Even in the area where I
usually receive SAQ there is a street and a telecom tower,
and when I am turning my loop into a horizontal position a
singing noise can be heard. But in the vertical position I
have no problems to give a rapport of RST 589 for SAQ.

 HW?

 Hi All

Why is there such a high number of DLs receiving SAQ at 116
 ?  Very well done!

 G putting in a measly 19 rprts.

I further away but putting in 26 rprts. Well done PA also in
 there with 24 rprts.

 I blame the rsgb.
