Hi,
Alex.
I
connected the U2 PA stage to a 12volt supply, and the BS170s blew up!
I
now have a slightly larger FET, a BSP126, in the PA stage. The BSP126 is a
surface-mounted device, and is soldered to a 2cm square of copper
laminate.
I'm
using the U2 on 630m, and I haven't tried it on any other bands with the
BSP126 PA.

Hi Dave,
I have the first version Ultimate
QRSS for 30meters, it runs at 500mW
with a couple of BS170
at 5 volt. Please can you share with us the modification for 1
W?

Yup.
I'm running one right now in WSPR mode on 457.730 kHz. Very
neat kit, but definitely QRP. I've tweaked mine up to about 1W rf
out.
A friend of mine, G8AJM, runs one on 20m. He's got to VK once
or twice using WSPR mode.

Just saw the following kit for 17.5 GBP, exciter that can
transit anywhere from 500Hz to 40+MHz in QRSS, WSPR, DFCW, Hell and
others. Has provisions for GPS locking:
Anyone know about this?
