... well, I haven't ;-) Out of
curiosity, I have instead implemented Guido's excellent
guide on Opera encoding
in a little Basic program, which outputs
the 110... keying sequence for any given callsign.
And it works! For a
quick on air test, I decided to use SpecLab's test signal
generator, modulated by an arbitrary waveform which can be
loaded from a text file. To fit to the required data
format, I edited the sequence by zero-padding from 239 to
256 symbols, then replacing every "1" by two lines of "32767",
and every "0" by two lines of "0", giving 512 samples
total. For "Op4" speed, the AM modulator
period was set to 0.256*4*256 = 262.144 seconds. Audio
output was used to key my TX on 478.63 kHz. I sent for
strings on Saturday night 21:30 to 21:47, and within a few
minutes, pskreporter.de showed spots from DF2JP,
G8HUH, ON6EO and DD7PC.
In case you would
also like to send Opera without "his master's software",
or associate obscure received sequences with
possible candidates, the little program and sourcecode is

Hello Markus, LF
i also have not installed Opera software but inspired by your
little Basic program i decided ( of course, just for fun) to
continue with another "homemade" Opera version.
I have used your program which outputs a callsign in a form of
ascii 010.... as an input for my little Fortran program which
puts RTS ( or DTR) line of a serial comm port
into high or low state with a specific [Opera n = 1,2,4,8,32]
duration in accordance with 1's or 0's of the encoded callsign.
This, in turn, keys on/off the transceiver.
Therefore, i have avoided the use of SL/ modulator etc... it
was too complicated to me at the first sight.. :) .. and
still is!
I put my trx into 20 meters band and today afternoon i've sent
few instances of the homemade Opera - got positive decodes frm
RA1AHQ,EA4SWL,F6AVP,IW2OHP
so definitely it works! Well, very likely , that in the
forthcoming looong winter evenings i will try to reinvent the
wheel once again
and following the excellent description of Opera encoding by
Guido, PE1NNZ i will write the rest of the ftn code just to
have an 'autonomic' piece of software.
Once again, i know we are doing so many unnnecessary things
but.. well, it was a fun...

p.s. question: As i am not familiar with the Opera 'original'
software and, in fact, with the pskreporter facility
how the reporting/monitoring stns got my locator
correctly ? is there any 'database' built in ?
