Further to my recent plea for help, I have tested the USB sound card 
on a newer laptop and it works OK.

The older computer uses USB 1, whereas the newer one uses USB 2. Is 
this an issue? Both run on WinXP (newer one is XP Pro).

I would prefer to use the older laptop (as it is spare) so I am still 
looking for ideas. The original sound card worked well before it went 
faulty.
