I made an extremely simple 'driver unit' for a 4-coil stepper motor
for a magnetic loop years ago.
The 'driver' didn't contain any electronics at all : Just a homemade
PCB with a central axis, a wiper (from an old relais contact), and
sizeteen copper segments on the PCB connected to the four coils in a
1-2-3-4-1-2-3-4-1-2-3-4-1-2-3-4 sequence (1..4 = coil numbers). So
when turning the wiper 1 turn clockwise, the motor did sixteen steps
clockwise, and vice versa.
A crank handle made the unit a bit more user-friendly, also for
quick rotation. I thing the motor had 3.5 degrees per step, so the
loop tuning was very accurate (and reproducable if the number of
turns on the 'driver' side was counted).
