Hi Chris that unit looks rather like the pictures of Steve GW3ALGs
variometer (others made similar units....the lego remote control rings
bells) which has featured in  the LF Handbook and both editions of LF Today.
If so Steve used a modifieed KW1000 linear I believe which was capable of
putting out quite a lot of power. Steve ran a 20m vertical with the top 10m
supported by party ballooons when the wind was suitably low. If it was put
below his main fixed loading coil as an incremental inductor then it would
not have had to suffer such high voltages as at the main coil top.

Need a variometer? Take a look at Ebay item 120636022163. The claim is this
item can cope with 'over a kW of RF' and covers 136kHz - I must say I have
my doubts! At least you can have a laugh at the 'amature' spelling and
terminology throughout!!
