Subject: VLF: Kite transmission
Dear Stefan, LF,
this afternoon Aug 29, my 0.2 mW kite
transmission from Nuernberg was copied by the DK7FC grabber. The signal
was on air between 11:45 and 14:30, with a few interruptions. At my
local grabber 5 km away, best SNR was 28 dB in 0.36 Hz and about 53 dB
in 0.95 mHz FFT resolution. The detailed timing was
UT Aug. 29 f/Hz
11:45 - 11:55 8969.98
11:55 - 12:03 8969.97
12:08 - 13:01 8969.98
13:05 - 13:20 8969.98
13:20 - 14:30 8969.97
The location was 49.3875 N 11.1688 E.
There are a lot of new buildings in the area, which are not shown on
Google aerial imagery.
Attached below are my notes intended
for the LF reflector from this afternoon. Though I could read and write
mails from the mobile internet connections, they were mysteriously
not forwarded by the RSGB reflector.
This was a very enjoyable afternoon!
Thanks a lot Stefan, for all the work you put into setting up and
operating your VLF grabber.

Markus (DF6NM)

Subject: Re: VLF: DF6NM transmitting on 8969.98 kHz, now!!
Dear LF,
after an unsuccessful trial yesterday,
I am on the air again from the former Feucht mil airfield, about 5 km
south of my qth. Currently lying on my belly in the grass, typing into
the mobile internet netbook.
Hardware is similar to the prior
experiments, 0.38 A into 100m of 0.4mm magnet wire pulled by a small
0.8 sqm delta kite. Ground connection is a simple clip to a nearby wire
fence, whch is several 100m long with posts in the ground. Wind is
fairly good today about 12 knots, kite angle about 35°, with few
outages but occasional raindrops. Power 120 W from a 12V "Nitro" car
amp, with the motor running idle most of the time. Signal is
generated by Speclab, locked to 10 kHz from a Jupier GPS board.
Sorry no piccies today as the camera
battery seems flat...
Very happy to be seen in Heidelberg!

Subject: VLF: Kite transmission on 8969.98 Hz
Dear LF,
I'm currently outdoors with a kite, transmitting a carrier on 8969.98
Hz (GPS controlled), about 0.2 mW EMRP. It seems to be visible on the
Heidelberg grabber now.
