I failed to mention that I have imported all my existing Tiscali e-mail addresses into Googlemail & I manage everything from there, also using Google Chrome browser.

I see you are using Googlemail, any archive folders (labels?) are shown on the LHS under the Inbox link, if you have many you sometimes have to click "more" to see them. If you have deleted them they've probably gone!
If you need a particular old message I keep everything.
