A variometer although convenient is not the best
way to resonate a LF/MF antenna, instead use a coil in series with the antenna
wire with the bottom end grounded. Tap the antenna wire down the coil for
resonance/lowest swr, then tap the coax feed cable to the antenna up a few turns
on the coil from ground for the perfect match, coax braid to earth at
bottom of coil.
then hit the morse key and work some
