Hmmm,
First, I might take some exception to the 'real radio amateurs with CW
skills' but I'll let it pass.
What makes you think that everything else will be zapped? Simple precautions
will prevent damage and all my 'signal' inputs - antennas, audio, data,
mains are heavily protected (Filtering, MOVs, Gas discharge and, in some
cases, professional EMP protectors (or so the manufacturers assure
me.......). I am fairly confident of equipment survival - if it works for
the RN it will work for me. Maybe. And NONE of the main gear is classifiable
as 'appliance' except for the mobile tcvr (our far-eastern friends can build
things smaller than I can...). This is also, naturally, protected.
For power I have batteries for back-up and a fairly large solar array to
back them up.
It can certainly be argued that some of the data modes might make it through
under 'abnormal' ionospheric conditions when CW will not. Agreed that this
presupposes a degree of computer equipment being around - a PDA will
suffice.
As for CW being a 'quiet' mode - keyboards are also quiet and as for
foxhunts I thought the TXs were automated and could (if the rules allowed)
use (stored) voice equally well. VHF foxhunting uses voice after all.

Because CW and the necessary equipment is the most direct approach, but you
have to be a real radio amateur with CW skills
Me and my world will still be going when all the appliance operators and
their digis have been Zapped.
CW is a quiet mode to operate, the only noise is a few clicks from the key
but SSB, AM etc are noisy modes and easily detected by passers by.
Voice modes are not used for radio fox hunting only CW for the same reasons.
