I wonder if you can just get rid of the transformer?
I used a similar system using fishing rods on a trip to France a while ago. The bandwidth was very narrow but I found that a coil tapped near ground for 50 ohms with a variometer and coil on top worked fairly well.  Ultimately to get higher current you may need a little more height than 8m. (Wire supported by a tree perhaps?)
