Can anyone suggest a source of robust versions, please? I am finding
that
the ordinary ones are not sufficiently cave proof.

Dear John,

Have a look at WH Westlake at http://whwestlake.co.uk/ (then go to page
1 of the catalogue). They do the pressure sleeve type of PL259, which
has cable clamping and a ferrule for the braid similar to that of the
better sort of BNC and N type connectors.
Not sure if they are actually more robust, but they are certainly more
waterproof and generally more reliable and nicer all round than the
usual sort of PL259 stocked by amateur radio suppliers. The usual things
seem to be made of some special alloy of zinc and cardboard that resists
any attempt at soldering or otherwise connecting the braid, and rots
away at the first hint of moisture. Why they are popular is a mystery to
me.

Cheers, Jim Moritz
