Thanks for that but the answer proved to be "turn down the control at the
side of the box" which left me with red face.

loadspeaker)
Usually at FET would solve it, with a series resistor to adjust the sidetone
level, and possibly a capacitor if it is a dc level from ground. It is many
switch type FETs, those I know and have in my store are 2N7006, VN2408,
VN2410, VN2222
Yaesu would probably have used a bipolar device, with questionable effect,
particularly in such old transceivers as my FT-902

Does anyone know how to lower the volume of the cw side-tone on a IC706Mk2G
?
If I turn down the volume control I need to turn it back up again to hear
the incoming signal each over. This gets tedious and wakes the neighbours
when I start sending without reducing audio gain .Also may bring MI5 round
at 2.00 am with current security jitters.

Nice to work you on voice on 80m for the first time Mal.
FB on the security. I find that the X-ray machines hate the solid metal
base
of some morse keys. Apparently the density of block of Semtex has a similar
effect on the image displayed on the security monitors.
