Hi Rich, sadly I think the forecast is not good. There was a minor
geomagnetic storm on the 4th (Kp=5) which has just made itself felt on
conditions. Steve's ( W3EEE ) DCF39 plot last night (6/7th) shows very
poor
levels and a high noise level (electric storms). The Kp index showed a
value
of 4 on the 5th March and there was another minor storm (Kp=5) on the 6th.
The main effects of the latter will be felt in the LF radio propagation on
around the 9/10th. "Not good omens in the sky " I am afraid Rich. However,
to balance that off, the daytime conditions should be enhanced I think. I
do
not have plots from Brian CT1DRP at the moment to confirm it, but these
sort
of conditions usually give a boost to signals in daytime from greater than
700kms.....peaking mid-day at the path centre.
Also one has to remember that the original crossing of the Atlantic were
done using 3 sec dot mode. Brian is regularly making the crossing in
almost
any conditions with 60 sec dot mode, which I make a 13dB advantage. The
accumulated knowledge for forecasting is still "very young" and it is the
exceptional cases that prove most interesting. Making prophesies can be a
self-fulfilling exercise as the young ladies of Delphi no doubt found out.
So it is essential we keep trying in all kinds of conditions.
Good Luck on your expedition but more important.....have lots of fun!!
Cheers de Alan G3NYK
