I must say it had not occurred to me that the puzzles were off topic, as
they seemed to be brain stretching exercises for the technically minded.
They don't interest me personally and they are the only messages I don't
archive here (which probably means my sub-conscious thought they were off
topic!).

It did, however, surprise me that in a weekend that saw more 136kHz contacts
at 1500km+ than ever before, and many 'firsts' and personal bests (thanks to
the excellent Russian expedition), together with more 73kHz stations than
ever before being copied in the USA, the reflector was dominated by academic
puzzles.

I would prefer to see clever chaps doing mental exercises than e-mails
complaining about things, so I say "live and let live". Andy himself once
commented in relation to activity reports that, provided a message is
clearly labelled in the subject line, it is easy to delete what you don't
want to read.
