Hi Bill & Group,

Although not necessarily long distance communication,
here in the US before there was Non-directional
beacons for aviation navigation, there was directional
beacons or four-course radio range.  These beacons
used large loops to develop the beam(s), see
http://www.navfltsm.addr.com/ndb-nav-history.htm .  I
seem to remember seeing some pix somewhere on the web
but can't seem to find them anymore.  A "Google" on
pertinent terminology of the era should turn up
something.
