I have posted the following on the RSGB's web site (www.rsgb.org) today:

------------------------
At a meeting on Thursday 4 May, the Radiocommunications Agency agreed to a request from the RSGB for continued use of the 73kHz band. This UK-only amateur band was first allocated early in 1998 for two years whilst international negotiations for the pan-European 136kHz band were taking place. The band was due to be withdrawn on 31 December 1999 but was later extended to 30 June 2000. Amateur experiments at this frequency are ongoing so a request was made for a continuation of the allocation. The RA has agreed initially for a further year, to 30 June 2001, but has not ruled out discussions on an extension beyond that date. Operation on the 71.6 - 74.4kHz band is by special Notice of Variation to the normal licence, and no new NoVs are envisaged. Licence conditions restrict the ERP to 1W and any operation away from the licensee's home address must be notified to the authorities. Experiments have resulted in several UK stations, running less than 100mW ERP, being received in a number of European countries at distances of over 1000km. A lecture on the results of the 73kHz experiment to date is part of the programme for the RSGB HF Convention this year.
