I operated on the 73kHz band on Thursday, 27 April between 1700
and 1830UTC, and again on Saturday 29 April between about 0900
and 1100.
Unfortunately, on the Thursday evening the kite gradually got lower
and lower whilst I was setting up the station, and a sked with
G3LDO failed both ways. Worse, on Saturday there was no wind at
all at any of the three locations tried, including one at 500m ASL !
A temporary antenna on fence posts allowed me to receive MI0AYZ
very well at 579, but my signals were too weak in GI to be read. I
had not planned on there being no wind at all. Unfortunately, I had
to return the generator to the hire shop at 1100UT on Saturday so
had to cut the operation short. There was no time to operate on
136kHz.
I made some transmissions using QRSS - did anyone detect them?
The full story of this interesting but unsuccessful trip can be found
on my web site.
I am determined to have one last try at getting out of Wales on
73kHz. I have two spare beds at my holiday home (plus a sofa and
floor space) and if anyone is interested in a weekend in sunny
Pembrokeshire I am planning an expedition between now and June -
probably late May. The idea will be to hire a generator close to
home and take it to GW so it is available for the whole weekend.
Travel Friday/Monday. Steve, GW4ALG, has already expressed an
interest. If we can coordinate with GI3PDN's 73k activity, so much
the better. I can supply a 200W synthesised TX, kite antenna, two
10m telescopic masts, Rx, coils etc. What I don't have is a
portable computer that will receive QRSS, though I can transmit it
using my keyer. This is a last chance to make some 'firsts' and
possibly to work OH1TN for an unbeatable distance record.
It may mean getting cold and wet (like at Puckeridge) and a small
contribution to the cost of the genny would help, so genuine takers
only please.
