From Dave G3YMC
Further to other suggestions for programs for calculating distances.

I use the VHF contest logging package written by G0GJV and available at
http://ourworld.compuserve.com/homepages/mjgoodey/

Although primarily a program written for contest entrants, it includes an
excellent feature to calculate distances and bearings from any combination of
Maidenhead, Lat/Long and (for the UK) National Grid Reference. You have to set
up a dummy contest with your own QTH locator details. The program (as Mike
insists on telling me) is totally free.

By the way I have just returned from Alderney (GU) where my brother lives. I
had no gear of any sort for 136 with me so was not able to even check for the
level of Loran. However no trace of it could be detected anywhere on long wave
including Droitwich so possibly it is not as bad as feared. A transmit
operation would need some preparation, as without sending gear in advance it
would have to either fit in a 15kg luggage allowance or be small enough to be
hand carried on the twice weekly jet foil service - or I expect a private boat
could be hired...
