There is no doubt in my mind that the burning materials would cause some
kind of electro-static charge in the atmosphere. I am sure it ionized the
atmosphere to the extent that refraction took place with radio signals.

It is just sad that things like that happen in life.

           For what it is worth, my son reported hearing a series of
unusual
"lightning stroke" sounds on the AM Broadcast band, just below 1000 Khz
just as Columbia began its re-entry. He is located on Cape Cod in Eastern
Massachusetts on the coast and there were no reports of lightning anywhere
on the East Coast at that time. His location is 1500 miles from Texas. Maybe
just a coincidence but he has not heard that type of sound before; they
were so unusual that he became curious and tuned to a station to find out it
"anything" had happened and heard that Columbia had just lost contact.
