I read with interest the comments about the Welbrook Loop, raised by the
review by Steve G0KYA in this month's Radcom. I have used one for the past
3 years and think the review is very fair. While it is true that the loop
is not so sensitive as a well placed wire antenna, it does assist in
overcoming the noise problem which is severe in many surburban areas. With
only a small garden, I could not operate on 600m without one. To obtain
best results, it should be placed well away from house and shack, where most
electrical noise originates. Normally is is not necessary to mount it high
up, and best results are often achieved with it close to the ground; mine is
a metre off the ground. For the above reasons I would not place it in the
loft where power cables usually run. I have interlocked the loop power
supply with the key or PTT, so that the loop is dead during transmission.
Finally, it is a well engineered device which I would not be without.

Thanks for reminding us that you are lucky enough to have a huge space for
antennas behind the miners rest home!!

Andy es Co
A friend lent me one of these loops and I was not impressed with its
performance compared to my resonant inv L system for 137. Likwise on 500
Khz
compared to my 1/4 wave inv L is was well down.
Small loops, micro Probes and Ferrite rod antennas work after a fashion
but
are no substitute for the real thing ie Verticals, Rhombics, Vee beams and
Large loops Yankee style.

I've just read the review of the welbrook Loop in the latest RadCom,
and wondering if anyone here knows the preamp configuration.
